The 4 star Hotel Trinidad del Mar is an All Inclusive on the front line of Playa Ancon, a fine white sandy beach and is surrounded by the Escambray mountains. It is just a few kilometers away from the heritage city of Trinidad.
Designed in a quasi colonial fashion (architectural elements imitate the nearby city of Trinidad's famous landmarks), it is far superior to the lackluster Hotel Ancón next door, despite its garish color schemes. It makes a big play for families kid's club, children's swimming pool, and special programs for children. But there's plenty of appeal for everyone thanks to a wide range of recreational attractions such as tennis, beach volleyball, and watersports that include aqua-bikes, Hobi-Cats, kayaks, and windsurfing. The buildings envelope a long, sinuous swimming pool surrounded by spacious sundecks and palm-shaded lawns. Guests get a choice of three restaurants. The evening cabaret shows are good, and the lively nightlife of Trinidad is a 20-minute taxi ride away. The hotel's 241 spacious air-conditioned guest rooms in three-story units include nine junior suites. They're handsomely decked out with eye-pleasing white and pale-yellow walls with dark blue accents and contemporary mahogany furnishings. And bathrooms boast modern fixtures. © 2009 Nigel Hunt

Playa Ancon, 12km south of Trinidad, got its name from a black rock on Punta Maria Aguilar that one served as landmark for sailors. Because it seemed to resemble the leg of a horse, it was nicknamed ancona (hind leg). Over the centuries, ocean currents have built up 4km of soft, white beach here, and a few hundred meters offshore is an excellent reef for snorkeling and scuba diving. Since the late 1980s, Playa Ancon has been developed for international tourism and now hosts several large hotels facing the warm Caribbean. Many visitors arrive on package tours and stay at one of these resorts. Playa Ancon makesan ideal base from which to explore the architectural treasures of nearby Trinidad and the forested Sierra del Escambray. Not as overwhelmed by tourism as Varadero or Guardalavaca, it's a good choice for a Cuban holiday. |
