Nigel's Special Hotels
The “Yunque de Baracoa”, is one of the landmark features that most impressed Christopher Columbus during his first explorations along the Northern coast of the island. At its base, the Campismo cabanas are located. There the visitors get in direct touch with the wild life discovered for the New World by the Genoese Admiral.

Surrounded by luxuriant vegetation, among coconut trees and cocoa plantations, banana, guava and mango trees, you find this fascinating place, located next to the calm waters of the Duaba River, inviting you to a refreshing swim during the dry season. A top spot for Nature and Adventure tourism, with trekking and hiking. Additionally, for those who wish to learn about the locals, nearby there is a small community dedicated to the coconut and cocoa agriculture.

The first villa founded in the Island, the mystic Baracoa city, lies only twelve kilometers away from the base. There, in the ancient Cathedral, you may watch America´s oldest relic: the Parra cross, brought here by Christopher Columbus to mark his way through Porto Santo, the tiny bay that he gave name to during his first visit to the Island.

Guide to Baracoa
It is situated on a bay close to the eastern tip of the island of Cuba where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. Founded in 1512 by Diego Velazquez, this is Cuba's oldest European settlement, things are pretty laid back in this town and the abundance of palm trees along this coast give it a South Pacific feel.

The fact that this was an important Spanish outpost is evidenced by the three impressive forts: Fuerte Matachin, now housing the museo municipal; Fuerte de la Punta, now refitted with a restaurant; and El Castillo de Seboruco, which is now a pleasant hotel.

On calle Antonio Maceo, you'll find people queuing for hot chocolate drinks in the baking tropical sun at the Casa del Chocolate, opposite is a lovely Casa de la Trova, holding rooftop performances and you can't forget to visit Plaza Independencia (it is the focal point for community life in the city), Yunque de Baracoa and The Stone Zoo, which comprises a multitude of stone animals.
