About Hotel Costasur
Club Amigo
Scuba diving & Snorkeling
For long the least appealing of the three hotels on Playa Ancón, the Costa Sur reopened in early 2008 after being closed for three years for a much-needed overhaul. It's clearly still focused on the budget traveler, and most guests arrive from Canada and Germany on low-end package vacations. This low-rise property with 131 rooms isn't actually on Playa Ancón. It lies about one km further west and has its own small white-sand beach framed by craggy and knife-edged eroded limestone. The shallows are good for snorkeling, but sharp coral outcrops require caution. The swimming pool is a safer bet. As of this writing, the hotel remake was still being completed, and a buffet restaurant was the only option, with an a la carte option schedule to open later in the year.

Costasur Hotel's contemporary post-revolutionary architecture is rather faceless, with no particular style. But it has been spruced up with new paint and red tile roofs, and accommodations now have fresh furnishings. Don't expect luxe furnishings though. Most rooms have twins, but king-size beds are also offered. You get satellite TV and telephones, but no refrigerators of in-room safes (available for rent at the front desk). Bungalows have a lounge and are better suited to families. A kid's club was still in the works in mid-2008. The hotel charges a stiff price for the single (and over-suscribed) computer providing Internet service for guests.

A thatched octagonal bar serves the beach, and there's a ho-hum lounge bar. A games room has table tennis and pool tables. And there are tennis and volleyball courts (bring your own tennis gear), but watersports are limited to kayaks, aqua-bikes, and snorkeling. Sure, the staff put on nightly entertainment, but this isn't Las Vegas! If it's nightlife you're seeking, take a taxi into Trinidad for the real McCoy. A major plus compared to the two competing hotels is the gorgeous views east across the bay to the Sierra Escambray mountains.

The 3 stars Hotel Club Amigo Costa Sur has a restaurant with Buffet service and one specialized in Italian specialties. Four bars, a night club, swimming pool, medical services, shop, games room, safe deposit box, currency exchange, parking lot, rental of aquatic bicycles and snorkelling equipment, kayaking and tourism bureau.

Guide to Playa Ancon
Playa Ancon, 12km south of Trinidad, got its name from a black rock on Punta Maria Aguilar that one served as landmark for sailors. Because it seemed to resemble the leg of a horse, it was nicknamed ancona (hind leg). Over the centuries, ocean currents have built up 4km of soft, white beach here, and a few hundred meters offshore is an excellent reef for snorkeling and scuba diving.
Since the late 1980s, Playa Ancon has been developed for international tourism and now hosts several large hotels facing the warm Caribbean. Many visitors arrive on package tours and stay at one of these resorts. Playa Ancon makesan ideal base from which to explore the architectural treasures of nearby Trinidad and the forested Sierra del Escambray. Not as overwhelmed by tourism as Varadero or Guardalavaca, it's a good choice for a Cuban holiday.
