The 3 star Hotel Faro Luna is situated in a discrete cove along the southern coast of Cuba, 20 km from the city of Cienfuegos and is the perfect site for scuba diving enthusiasts. A smaller and more intimate neighbor to the Hotel Club Amigo Rancho Luna, this sister property has similar furnishings. In all other regards, it's a different kind of fish. The hotel stands atop a craggy bluff, and the beach is a five-minute walk away.
There's a delphinarium (dolphin and sea-lion shows) and a scuba diving outlet a stone's throw away, but the little village here otherwise lacks all facilities. Car rental is offered, and you can sign up for a series of local excursions, including by horse-drawn carriage.
The hotels' 46 air-conditioned sparsely furnished rooms are in three buildings standing four-square behind the beach. All rooms have ocean views (the sunsets here can be spectacular), with those in the 200 block preferred. They have satellite TVs and in-room safes, and some rooms have refrigerators, but the balconies and patios are shared with adjoining units.
The large pool here is probably this hotel's chief asset. And you can rent lounge chairs etc. on the nearby beach, where Cuban families gather on weekends (a few Cubans also use the hotel, although most guests are on budget end tour groups passing through for one or two nights).
Dining in the sole restaurant gets boring very quickly, with only a limited menu on offer, and the pool bar can usually conjure up nothing more than simple ham and cheese sandwiches. To spice things up, guests here can purchase a day or night pass to the nearby Hotel Club Amigo Rancho Luna. Service at Faro Luna is hit and miss, although staff are courteous enough.
Rancho Luna Beach is located just outside of Cienfuegos. The semicircle-shaped, soft sand and beach is bathed by peaceful and warm waters. There are different diving areas nearby. Its coastal platform is particularly rough and inhabited by a rich marine life; its shallow waters hide beautiful corals that form low and medium depth reefs in the Barreras Cove and in Las Playitas; abrupt underwater geography and abundant sponges, gorgonians and corals are located much deeper and are particularly enticing.
Punta La Cueva is sited in the Bahia de Cienfuegos across the water from Cienfuegos City to the West.
