The ambience of the Telegrafo is definitely one of cosmopolitan hustle and bustle, as opposed to drowsy colonial charm. Located on the well-known corner of Prado and Neptuno streets (opposite a particularly good Italian restaurant) it overlooks Parque Central on one side and the elegant Paseo del Prado promenade on the other. Its pavement café area is perfectly placed for people- and vintage car-watching, and it has an attractive (and much quieter) central bar area in the courtyard where the remains of original columns made of coral limestone and brick contrast pleasantly with modern architectural detailing.

The Telegrafo has been a famous Havana institution since 1888 and during the early twentieth century it was regarded as one of the best hotels in Latin America. It is only a couple of minutes’ walk away from the Museo de Bellas Artes, the Capitolio and the Gran Teatro de La Habana where all Havana’s best opera and ballet is staged.

Recently it was restored, and is now run by the Office of the City Historian of Havana through its company called Habaguanex. All its profits are reinvested in the restoration of the city’s historical centre.

Details of Standard room
All 54 standard rooms at the Telegrafo are nothing short of wonderful, in Cubaism’s opinion. The furniture is completely modern which provides a refreshing aesthetic change from creaky cobwebby Colonial style, especially if you are staying in more than one place during your time in Havana. They have attractive tiled floors and high windows letting in masses of light but virtually no noise or heat - despite being on an amazingly busy street corner - due to efficient double glazing and gently humming air conditioning. The walls are decorated with paint effects in pretty colours, the textiles are attractive, the lighting well-designed, the ceilings are elegantly high and the bathrooms are clean, modern and bright. Need we say more? 47 of the rooms are twin bedded and the other 7 have matrimonial beds.

Details of Junior Suite room
The 9 Telegrafo’s Junior Suites are beautifully laid out and decorated in similar style to the standard rooms, but they’re much larger and have very attractive sitting rooms and with adjoining guest loos just inside the entrance. These are great favourites with Cubaism’s clients.

Guide to Old Havana
The heart and soul of Havana is the old town Habana Vieja, declared a Heritage of Mankind Site in 1982 by UNESCO. It was keen to preserve the beauty of its architecture and promote the historical importance of its role within the region.

The following are just some of the interesting places to visit: Plaza de Armas, centred around a statue of the patriot Cespedes and emcompassed by shaded marble benches and second-hand booksellers, is the first public square built in the city. Plaza de la Catedral is perhaps the most beautiful square in the Caribbean which is surrounded by examples of the finest baroque architecture in the country. El Templete, small neoclassical temple which marks the spot where the first Mass was said in 1519. Castillo de la Real Fuerza is one of the oldest forts in the Americas, it holds modern art exhibitions downstairs and the battlements afford good views over the harbour. Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the seat of government and governor's residence was transferred from the fort to the built. The presidential palace and then the municipal palace until Castro seized power it is now Museo de la Ciudad de la Habana. Museo de Arte Colonial, fine palace constructed in 1720, its yellow courtyard and little-altered architectural features are complemented by a large collection of 17th- and 18th-century furniture. Calle Obispo is Old Havana's most important and smartest thoroughfare, pedestrianized with missile heads as bollards.
