Provinca Holguin je četrta največja na kubi. V hribovju te province je velik del rudnin kot so nikelj in kobalt, ki so bile in so še vedno pogosto minirane. Ta industrija igra pomembno vlogo v tej regiji, saj se vse rudnine in poljščine nahajajo okoli mesta Mao na severni obali.
